How Much Does Cyber Insurance Cost in 2026? A Realistic Guide for SMEs

Ask ten brokers what cyber insurance costs and you will get ten versions of "it depends." That is technically true - and completely useless when you are budgeting for next year. Here is what the numbers actually look like in 2026, and what moves them.

The short answer

For a small or medium-sized business, cyber insurance in 2026 typically costs between €1,000 and €7,000 per year, with most SMEs landing around €1,500–€2,500 annually for €1M in coverage. Micro-companies with clean security postures can find entry-level policies below €1,000; mid-market firms with complex data flows routinely pay €10,000+.

US figures run similar: most small businesses pay $1,200–$7,000 per year, with a median around $2,000.

What actually drives your premium

Insurers price cyber risk on a handful of variables, roughly in this order:

Factor Why it matters
Revenue & headcount Proxy for attack surface and claim size
Industry Healthcare, finance, legal pay more - richer data, stricter regulators
Security controls MFA, EDR, backups, training. No MFA can mean no quote at all
Coverage limit & deductible €1M vs €5M limit changes everything
Claims history A prior incident follows you for 3-5 years

The single cheapest way to cut your premium is boring: turn on MFA everywhere, keep offline backups, and document it. Many carriers now refuse to quote businesses without MFA - and reward those with managed detection (MDR/EDR) with double-digit discounts.

The part of the price tag nobody mentions

Here is something we can quantify because we track it across our catalog: of the 682 cyber insurance products listed on Ryskly across 56 countries, 524 (77%) include incident response services in the premium, 268 (39%) include security awareness training, and 188 (28%) bundle managed detection and response.

That means the sticker price often includes services you would otherwise buy separately - an incident response retainer alone can cost €5,000-€15,000 per year on the open market. Two policies with identical premiums can differ by thousands of euros in bundled value. When comparing quotes, price the services, not just the coverage.

Broker or direct?

In our catalog, 561 of 682 products (82%) are distributed through brokers rather than sold directly. For SMEs this is usually good news: brokers know which carriers are soft on your industry, and their commission is built into the premium either way. But it also means the "get a quote in 5 minutes" websites cover only a thin slice of the actual market.

How to budget for 2026

  1. Start from your revenue: below €2M, budget €1,000-€2,000; €2-10M, budget €2,000-€5,000.
  2. Add your risk multipliers: regulated data, prior incidents, weak controls.
  3. Subtract bundled services you currently pay for separately.
  4. Get at least three quotes - pricing spread between carriers for the same risk regularly exceeds 40%.

Start by seeing what is actually available in your market: compare cyber insurance products by country - coverage limits, bundled services and distribution routes, side by side.
